The Royal College of Psychiatrists is the leading medical authority on mental health in the United Kingdom and is the professional and educational organisation for doctors specialising in psychiatry. The College plays a central role in establishing and promoting the highest standards of psychiatric care and training in the United Kingdom.


A unique opportunity for a Library and Information Manager has arisen in the Strategic Communications Department of the College.


The Library and Information Manager role is pivotal in supporting the education and continuing professional development of College members by providing appropriate information resources. The role is also responsible for helping staff achieve their strategic objectives by providing research support, and advice.


The College is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual with proven experience in a Library or information services role; a working knowledge of science, technology, medicine or health information services; and excellent communication skills.


The key responsibilities of the role are:


1. Maintaining the College’s library collection by selecting and acquiring new items for the collection

2. Managing, developing, and promoting a full range of library and information services including reference services, electronic journal email alerts, literature searches and document delivery

3. Promoting the Library and information service to members, staff and researchers by developing and distributing promotional library materials, maintaining and updating the Library’s web presence, and engaging with members, including psychiatric trainees through the Virtual Library Committee

4. Maintaining Library systems and access to resources including the online Library catalogue, and training Library users to effectively search, evaluate, and access the Library catalogue and other electronic resources

5. Managing Library operations, staff, budget and facilities to meet standards of delivery.

6. Representing the College Library by liaising with external organisations to achieve best practice across medical library services.
