To support the implementation
of the
Mental Health Act (2007) ‘Age-Appropriate Environment’
amendment to the 1983 Act, the Royal College of Psychiatrists'
Centre for Quality Improvement (CCQI) - in
association with the National Mental Health
Development Unit (NMHDU) - has
developed the AIMS-SC4Y standards. These standards aim to
help wards to provide safe and appropriate care for young people
who require admission to any adult inpatient mental health service
(e.g. adult mental health wards, adult eating disorder units, and
‘Mother and Baby’ units).
The CCQI offers an
accreditation service to support adult wards to
implement the amendment through a process of self- and peer-review
against the AIMS-SC4Y standards. The accreditation programme
will help Trusts and services ensure that they have a ward (or
wards) that are prepared for the admission of a young person,
when the need arises. It is important to
note that an environment to which a young person is admitted must
be assessed as appropriate for each individual at the time the
admission is being considered.
Why is this important for adult mental health
wards?
The amendment will commence on 1 April
2010.
