Training Modules and Materials
The Deprivation of Liberty
Safeguards are new measures to protect people who lack the mental
capacity to make certain decisions for themselves. They come
into effect in April 2009 using the principles of the Mental
Capacity Act 2005 and apply to people in care homes or hospitals
where they may be deprived of their liberty.
There are two training
modules. Each of the two modules is available in two formats:
- training manuals designed for trainers who
wish to train medical practitioners in group face-to-face training
courses
- e-learning modules for the independent
learning of medical practitioners
The Royal College of
Psychiatrists has produced the DoLS training modules and all
related training materials in collaboration with the Department of
Health. In line with the DoLS Regulations (SI 2008 No.1858), the
training is made available by the Royal College of
Psychiatrists.
Training Aims
The DoLS training aims
to:
- define the overall position of DoLS in relation to mental
health legislation
- equip learners with the knowledge they need to undertake the
role of a mental health assessor in relation to DoLS
Who is the training designed for?
The training is designed for
two groups of medical practitioners:
- medical practitioners who have at least three years post
registration experience of the diagnosis or treatment of a mental
disorder from a variety of medical specialties and who are not
Mental Health Act Section 12 Approved. These medical practitioners
will need to be trained in both modules.
- MHA approved Section 12 doctors (psychiatrists and
non-psychiatrists) or for those who have completed the Introductory
Training Course. These medical practitioners will only need to be
trained in module 2.

Healthcare (e-LfH) in partnership with the Royal College of
Psychiatrists. The modules form part of the DoLS training provided
by the Department of Health (DH) and the Royal College of
Psychiatrists (RCPsych) and are based on the same content as the
group-base training courses mentioned above.
*To date the DoLS Regulations for
Wales are not published. It is expected that these
modules/materials will be applicable for use in Wales.
