GAIN Guidelines on the Mental Health (NI) Order 1986

  GAIN Logo

RCPsych in NI has been working with the Guidelines and Audit Implementation Network Project Team (GAIN) and RQIA to produce Guidelines on the use of the Mental Health (NI) Order 1986.

The Guidelines offer a practical and accessible learning package for all agencies and professionals involved in mental health care. There has been no recent guidance which takes into account changes to the interpretation of the Order, related legislation, political and organisational change, changes in service delivery and changes in the expectation of service users and carers; these Guidelines therefore fill a longstanding gap for those charged with operating the Order and also provide a pathway for the introduction of planned new developments in mental health legislation; the College has been very pleased to have been involved with the production of these resources.

Four CPD on-line modules have been made freely available via CPD On-line.  These include an introduction to the Order, admission to hospital, assessment and treatment and safeguards and rights. The Guidelines are further supported by a list of resources.

RCPsych in NI wish to thank GAIN for providing this resource and to pay tribute to the Project Team Chair, Dr Maria McGinnity, and the agencies, professionals, carers and service users involved.

We are indebted to Drs Caroline Donnelly, Roinin McNally, Peter Sloan and Bernadette Hamilton, who helped compile the Guidelines and authored the e-learning resource.

We are grateful to the many members who contributed to peer reviewing and editing the documents and gave freely of their time and expertise. Thanks also to the College centrally for their help in developing the first CPD On-line resource specifically tailored to Northern Ireland.
