Adolescent Forensic Psychiatry Special Interest Group

About the Adolescent Forensic Psychiatry Special Interest Group

Formed in November 2002, the genesis of this SIG marked an increasing interest in the mental health of children and adolescents who pose a risk to themselves or others. This group of young people have mental health needs that are relevant to a broad range of psychiatric disciplines including general adult psychiatry, psychiatry of people with learning disability, neuropsychiatry, substance misuse, forensic psychiatry and child & adolescent psychiatry.

A questionnaire survey of the SIG's membership has informed the group's priorities. The SIG's aims include the following:

  • To promote forensic mental health services for young people
  • To support training in child and adolescent forensic psychiatry at all levels.
  • To support clinical and academic developments in this field
  • To act as an information and networking resource.

The SIG has two general meetings per year:

  • Faculty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Annual Meeting
  • Faculty of Forensic Psychiatry Annual Meeting

In June 2009 Drs Philip Collins and Richard Church, both practicing in London, have taken on new roles as Chair and Finance Officer. We are both most grateful to our colleagues Dr Peter Misch and Dr Ekkehart Staufenberg for their hard work on this SIG over the last few years. We are happy to report that Dr Misch has kindly agreed to stay on as Honorary Secretary and we are grateful for his continued guidance and assistance.
