A new resource which is part of a planned programme to support the development of quality commissioning of inpatient care and care planning for young people requiring mental health care has been launched.

Members have the opportunity to provide the QNIC project team with valuable feedback on the peer review process

Why was the network been established and what does it do?

QNIC was developed from the National In-patient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Study (NICAPS) in 2001. The network aims to demonstrate and improve the quality of in-patient child and adolescent psychiatric in-patient care through a system of review against the QNIC service standards. This process follows a clinical audit cycle with self-review and peer-review.

Given their short supply and high cost, it is essential that child and adolescent psychiatric in-patient units demonstrate their quality and appropriateness. However, because of their geographic spread, unit staff can feel isolated and unable to communicate with other CAMHS professionals. Therefore, quality improvement can occur in isolation. QNIC aims to resolve this by providing a single channel for the effective dissemination of important information from central sources such as national and professional bodies and coordinating information sharing between units, e.g. regarding best practice.

QNIC reviews are not an inspection or accreditation test, nor a drive to uniformity. It is a supportive network with the emphasis on facilitating change.

The network was originally funded for 3 years by The Health Foundation (previously PPP Medical Healthcare Trust). It is now funded by the subscriptions of members.

Would you like to attend a QNIC review?

The review days run from 10am - 3.30pm and provide an excellent opportunity to visit another service and network with other CAMHS professionals. All disciplines are welcomed as part of the review team and each day will be led by an experienced lead reviewer.

The link below outlines all the peer reviews so far up until Christmas. If you would like to attend one of these reviews please fill in the form below and return it to the QNIC team.
