Looking ahead to 2012

Tuesday, 3 January 2012

The new year must be filling me with enthusiasm - this is my second blog post today! It is always good to have time at home with family over Christmas and New Year, and time to reflect.

Six months into being President of the College, this afternoon I have a meeting at the Academy to review what, if any more, we can do about the Health Social Care Bill, with respect to bringing about the changes we wish to see and/or whether at this late stage the Academy might withdraw support for the Bill. No doubt this will be an interesting meeting.

Reflecting over Christmas, whilst looking through book chapters for a new book I am editing, has led to me linking together more clearly the themes of resilience and recovery. Resilience and recovery do indeed seem the appropriate theme for 2012, in light of the emergence of new initiatives on public health across the UK, and with the reality of what may be happening to services over the next 12 months.

Today has mainly been about sorting through the postbag. I have received a fascinating report from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, Mortality related to drug use in Europe: Public health implications. I've also watched a short DVD from the Prison Reform Trust entitled Talking justice: Talking sense. As always, with their many publications, the Trust explores the scope of community solutions to crime, and you can watch it on their website.
