The College, with leading mental health charities, is on a final
push with the Health and Social Care Bill. Despite numerous
organisations voicing their concerns, the controversial proposals
look likely to become law in the next few weeks. Whatever happens
with this Bill, I believe we need to have parity of esteem for
mental and physical health. We’ve prepared a short
briefing on parity of esteem and why it matters, which I’d
encourage you to take a look at.
Parity of esteem is a key element of the
mental health strategy and should be core to the Health and Social
Care Bill, to enable a range of NHS and public health outcomes to
be achieved. Last month, the House of Lords voted in favour of an amendment to the Bill to
place an explicit duty on the Secretary of State to promote parity
of esteem between mental and physical health services. We hope this
amendment, or an amendment having the same effect, will be
supported by MPs when the Bill returns to the Commons next
week. I will update you again soon on our progress.
