Overview

This course will provide both specific knowledge and skills enhancement to increase patient and team safety. It aims to maximise the individual’s contribution to team functioning and the emphasis will be on the practical aspects of the ECT process.

Who should attend

• ECT Nurses

• ECT Suite Managers

• ECT Anaesthetists and ODPs

• Psychiatrists

• Psychiatric trainees

This Training Day will also be of value to Approved Clinicians and Associated Health Professionals who wish to consolidate their understanding of ECT.

N.B. ECT competencies for core trainees
This course meets the criteria for the theory and background elements of the ECT competency sign off for core training. It does not satisfy the practical element, although the simulation workshop (WF) will be helpful for this.

Overview

This short course has been developed in collaboration between the Royal College of Psychiatrists ECT Accreditation Service (ECTAS) and the National Association of Lead Nurses in ECT (NALNECT) in response to feedback from ECT nurses regarding the lack of national post registration provision of training in this specialist area of practice. This course is the equivalent of 3 study days.

Aims

The course will provide nurses with the knowledge, skills and expertise to carry out all duties and responsibilities for ECT in accordance with:

  • The Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines and the ECT Accreditation Service Standards for the Administration of ECT
  • The Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Association of Anaesthetists guidelines
  • The NICE guidelines
  • The Royal College of Nursing guidance for nurses

Delegates will be expected to develop knowledge and skills and initiate and share good practice in relation to ECT.
