The Gaskell Medal and
Prize
This prize was established from a trust
fund in memory of Dr Samuel Gaskell, Medical Superintendent of the
County Asylum, Lancaster. The Gaskell Medal and Prize has
always been considered one of the foremost academic distinctions
for scholarship in clinical psychiatry. Many of its holders
have achieved distinctions in psychiatry.

The Laughlin Prize
This prize was established in 1979 by Dr
Henry P Laughlin, founder and first President of the American
College of Psychiatrists. Dr Laughlin was elected
Corresponding Member of the Royal Medico-Psychological Association
(RMPA) in 1961 and Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of
Psychiatrists in 1976. He has always been a warm friend of
British psychiatry and has attended a number of Annual
Meetings.
The Laughlin Prize is awarded after the
spring and autumn Examinations. The Examinations Department
of the College administers this prize.

apply but all candidates taking the Paper 3 and the CASC MRCPsych
Examinations will be considered

The Standish-Barry Prize
This prize was established in 1998 as a result
of a bequest made by Dr Standish-Barry to the Irish Division with a
view to instituting a prize for the best results by an Irish
graduate in the MRCPsych Membership Examinations. The first such
prize was awarded after the autumn 1999 diet of the MRCPsych
Examinations. This prize is administered by the Examinations
Department of the College.

apply but Irish candidates taking the Paper 3 and the CASC MRCPsych
Examinations will be considered.

The Alexander Mezey
Prize
Alexander Mezey 1922-2008
Alexander Mezey was born in Romania and
qualified in medicine at the University of Geneva. After some years
working in Switzerland and France, he arrived in England in 1951
and in a distinguished career was elected both FRCP (Edinburgh) and
FRCPsych. His clinical practice included extensive work on mental
illness in immigrant communities and his book, Muse in Torment, is
an elegant and extensive consideration of the psychopathology of
creativity.
The Alexander Mezey Prize is awarded annually
to the international medical graduate (IMG) practising in the
United Kingdom who obtains the highest number of stations passed in
the CASC and highest pass mark in Paper 3 when completing the
MRCPsych examination. The Examinations Sub-Committee identifies the
successful candidate each December when marks from all sittings of
the examinations in that year are available. The Examinations
Unit, part of the college's department
of Professional Standards, administers this prize.

on vocational/professional activities
Frequency: Annually
Eligible: No
application is required. All IMG candidates successfully completing
the CASC Examination who are practising in the United Kingdom or
Ireland will be considered.

is awarded to the IMG practising in the United Kingdom who obtains
the highest number of stations passed in the CASC and highest pass
mark in Paper 3. The Examinations Sub-Committee will identify the
successful candidate.
