Affiliates and SAS Members Session: Annual Meeting of the Royal College of Psychiatrists

This year one of the important attractions for SAS doctors was that the College allocated a dedicated session for affiliates and SAS members at its Annual Meeting in Glasgow on 11^th July 2006. The Deputy Registrar, Dr Afzal Javed, opened the meeting and introduced the group. He explained that the affiliates and SAS doctors have become an important group within the college. The establishment of a special committee at the College for this grade of doctors has initiated a number of activities in different areas including their involvement in College policy. He stressed that the College wants to be inclusive. Then Mr Robert Jackson, Head of Postgraduate Education at the College gave an overall view of Modernisation of Medical Careers (MMC) and teaching and training opportunities for affiliates and SAS doctors. It was highlighted that the establishment of PMETB has also emphasised the need for more support for this grade of doctors. He informed the group about different routes available to SAS doctors for inclusion on the  specialist register. Later on Dr Ishtiaq Ahmad, affiliates rep at the College’s central SAS committee, was invited and he spoke about the outcome of negotiations regarding the new contract for SAS. Lastly, another dynamic affiliate, Dr Shahid Quraishi, who is one of the earliest successful candidate, was invited to talk about “ How to make a successful application to PMETB under Article 14”. He shared his experience with the audience and explained to the group how to gather and structure the evidence. He highlighted the important documents to include in the application folder. In the evening, a reception was organised for the affiliate group. This was attended by the College President, Dean, Deputy Registrar and other seniors in addition to the affiliates.

Overall feedback has suggested that the meeting met its objectives and hopefully will attract more people to future meetings.
