About the London Division

Welcome to the London Division of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. The London Division is coterminous with the London NHS Region.  Regular Academic meetings are held by the London Division.

The population of London was 7,172,000 on Census day 2001. Greater London covers an area of 1,584 sq km and is the smallest of the England’s nine regions (1.2% of the total land area of England). London’s population is projected to increase by 700,000 by 2016, greatly increasing the pressure on the city’s housing stock. London has the highest unemployment rate of any English region, at 7.1%. The national rate is 5.1%. There are more unemployed people in London (173,500 claimants) than in Scotland and Wales put together (100,300 and 45,800 respectively).

Detailed road maps and satellite pictures of the streets of London can be viewed at http://maps.google.com/  Just enter a postcode or type in the name of a landmark and you can view either a map or a satellite picture. There is also the facility to zoom in until you can see cars, buildings and trees! The Royal College of Psychiatrists is situated in Belgrave Square.

During 2001/2002 there were 7,216 formal admissions under the Mental Health Act 1983 to NHS and private facilities in London. This was 27.5% of the England total. Approximately a quarter of all the Class A problem drug users in England and Wales, upwards of 70,000 people, are estimated to live in London. There are currently over 2,500 members of the Royal College of Psychiatrists belonging to the London Division including the whole range of specialists within psychiatry.
