GAIN Guidelines on the Mental Health (NI) Order 1986

RCPsych in NI has been working with the Guidelines and Audit Implementation Network Project Team (GAIN) and RQIA to produce Guidelines on the use of the Mental Health (NI) Order 1986.

The Guidelines offer a practical and accessible learning package for all agencies and professionals involved in mental health care. There has been no recent guidance which takes into account changes to the interpretation of the Order, related legislation, political and organisational change, changes in service delivery and changes in the expectation of service users and carers; these Guidelines therefore fill a longstanding gap for those charged with operating the Order and also provide a pathway for the introduction of planned new developments in mental health legislation; the College has been very pleased to have been involved with the production of these resources.

Four CPD on-line modules have been made freely available via CPD On-line.  These include an introduction to the Order, admission to hospital, assessment and treatment and safeguards and rights. The Guidelines are further supported by a list of resources.

RCPsych in NI wish to thank GAIN for providing this resource and to pay tribute to the Project Team Chair, Dr Maria McGinnity, and the agencies, professionals, carers and service users involved.

We are indebted to Drs Caroline Donnelly, Roinin McNally, Peter Sloan and Bernadette Hamilton, who helped compile the Guidelines and authored the e-learning resource.

We are grateful to the many members who contributed to peer reviewing and editing the documents and gave freely of their time and expertise. Thanks also to the College centrally for their help in developing the first CPD On-line resource specifically tailored to Northern Ireland.

RCPsych Awards 2010

Dr John Simpson with Ian Sutherland and Francis Rice, Southern TrustProf Dinesh Bhugra and Dr John Simpson

Dr John Simpson, of Southern Health and Social Care Trust, has been named Medical Manager of the Year 2010 by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

The annual RCPsych Awards mark the highest level of achievement within psychiatry, and are designed to recognise and reward excellent practice in the field of mental health.

Dr Simpson was presented with his award at a prestigious ceremony held at the Royal Society of Medicine on 16 November.

Competition for the RCPsych Awards was extremely tough, and the judging panels were overwhelmed by the quality of this year’s entries. The judges said: “Dr Simpson has been at the forefront of improvement and innovation in Northern Ireland for over 15 years. He has an exemplary record through troubled times and major service redesign. He has ably led colleagues through radical reorganisation whilst sustaining respect, harnessing enthusiasm, and maintaining clinical credibility.”

Professor Dinesh Bhugra, President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said: “Through the RCPsych Awards, we bring national recognition to those individuals and services who are helping to deliver the very best mental health care for service users and carers. On behalf of the College, I heartily congratulate Dr Simpson and extend those congratulations to the rest of his colleagues in Belfast as well.”

Judging - Stepping Out of the Shadows

In October 2009 the Northern Ireland Judical Appointments Commission (NIJAC) launched the Judical Shadowing Scheme.  The scheme gives medical professionals,  a unique opportunity to spend a day in a court or tribunal of their choice and go behind the bench. More information.
