CARDIFF MEDFEST
2012
The National Medical Film
Festival
Thursday 9 February
1st Floor, Cardiff Student Union
from 6.30pm
The Wales Student Psychiatry Society
are hosting an exiting event on Thursday 9 February - free entry,
free wine and refreshments and lots of free popcorn!
Supported by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Welsh
Psychiatric Society now in it's second year, MEDFEST will consist
of a series of film nights taking place at 16 universities across
the country. Each event will comprise an evening of short
film screenings and discussions relating to the festival theme
'HealthScreen: Understanding illness through film'.
The remit of MEDFEST 2012 is to
provoke debate of the social, political and ethical implications of
depictions of health and illness on our screens. When
inaccurate, these portrayals can create myths, propagate falsehoods
and incite stigma. But when thoughtfully presented, they have
the potential to empower patient groups and dispel prejudice.
This will also be an opportunity to find out more about a career in
psychiatry from those working in the specialty.
Featuring:
- BAFTA and RTS award winning 'Animated
Minds' series of films directed by Andy Glynnewww.animatedminds.com
- Claire Gellard's short film 'Locked'
and award winning entry in the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film
Festival 2011
- 1950's public education films from
the Wellcome Trust archives
With clips chosen by our panel from
feature length films, we will question the extent to which
Hollywood films in particular have a moral responsibility to make
their representation of health/disease accurate, and to what extent
art is simply for art's sake.
The flyer for the
event is now available to view/download.
