Available during office hours from Monday to Friday.

The Psychiatrists' Support Service is a free, confidential support and advice service for members, trainee members and associates of the Royal College of Psychiatrists who find themselves in difficulty or in need of support. There is a dedicated telephone helpline, where calls are kept separate from the main College phone line, and this will be answered by the service manager. If appropriate, you will be put in touch with another psychiatrist who will be able to talk through the issues with you and offer support or signpost you to appropriate services.

Types of problems

Psychiatrists contact the service about a range of issues including:

·         bullying and harassment

·         training and exams

·         mental and physical health 

·         serious clinical incidents

·         internal and external reviews and inquiries

·         difficult working relationships

·         whistle-blowing

·         GMC and NCAS assessments

 

Since the service was launched in 2007, there have been over 500 contacts and the most common issues have been related to mental health, bullying and harassment and difficult working relationships. The service has developed a range of information guides to assist doctors in difficultly which can be found here.
