The Psychiatrists' Support Service is a free, confidential support and advice service for members, trainee members and associates of the Royal College of Psychiatrists who find themselves in difficulty or in need of support. There is a dedicated telephone helpline, where calls are kept separate from the main College phone line, and this will be answered by the service manager. If appropriate, you will be put in touch with another psychiatrist who will be able to talk through the issues with you and offer support or signpost you to appropriate services.

The Psychiatrists Support Service recently held its first conference on the importance of ‘Building resilience through support.’ In light of the GMC report on ‘Doctors who commit suicide while under GMC fitness to practice investigation,’ the PSS felt the topic to be extremely relevant in the current working environment. The conference proved popular with an attendance of almost 160 delegates attending and an impressive selection of posters submitted for the competition on the day.

Alongside multiple workshops providing for active engagement on key topics and an interactive panel discussion on supporting doctors through GMC investigations we were privileged to have a high calibre of speakers including Dr Debbie Cohen, Professor Bill Fulford, Professor Steve Peters and Dr Clare Gerada. All of the speakers provided expert opinions on how to support doctors and to build resilience to ensure a healthy workforce. The PSS would like to extend a very big thank you to all our speakers and those that contributed to making the day such a success.

The feedback received from attendees was very positive and we look forward to welcoming back delegates for another PSS conference next year.
