Draft Strategic Objectives

Strategic aim 1: Set standards and promote excellence in psychiatry and mental healthcare

What will we focus on between 2012 and 2015?

 

  • Increase the number of people choosing a career in psychiatry.
  • Continue to promote quality improvement in mental health services to improve the lives of those with mental illness.
  • Define and support the leadership role of psychiatrists.
  • Promote the importance of research into mental illness and learning disability to improve the health of the Nation.
  • Ensure there is accurate data for planning the future psychiatric workforce.
  • Identify and disseminate outcome measures of value in determining the patient experience of mental health care.
  • Ensure College standards meet the requirements of the 21st century psychiatrist.
  • Put mental health at the heart of public health (Fair Deal ongoing priority).
  • Promote sustainable mental health care.

Strategic aim 2: Lead, represent and support psychiatrists

What will we focus on between 2012 and 2015?

 

  • Develop leadership skills for psychiatrists.
  • Identify and reward good practice in mental health services.
  • Strengthen the voice and influence of psychiatry in medicine and in primary care in particular.
  • Work with the Royal College of General Practitioners on the commissioning of mental health services.
  • Ensure the College supports members to meet the requirements of revalidation.
  • Ensure that the College supports its members throughout their careers.
  • Develop strategies to influence psychiatric practice internationally.
  • Streamline and strengthen the College responsiveness to its members.
  • Ensure that the College has appropriate headquarters.

Strategic aim 3: Work with patients, service users, carers and their organisations

What will we focus on between 2012 and 2015?

 

  • To ensure that the family is placed at the heart of the delivery of mental health services.
  • Produce and disseminate high quality public education material, web resources and publications.
  • The College will use its political influence to ensure legislation in all four nations and recognises the importance of high quality mental health care .
  • Influence mental health policy through collaboration with other mental health organisations and allied groups.
  • Highlight inequalities in health and social care for vulnerable groups, including children and people with learning disabilities, patients in forensic settings, and those from diverse cultures.
  • Support services, treatment and choice for psychiatric patients across the lifespan in this time of economic uncertainty.
  • Maintain and strengthen service user and carer involvement throughout the College.
