Rights and privileges for Specialist Associates of the College

Extension of privileges

Rights and privileges for Specialist Associates of the College

The College Officers are delighted to announce that Council has just supported an extension of the privileges accorded to this valued group of associates. Specialist Associates are doctors working in the UK at consultant level having gained entry to the Specialist Register, but who hold qualifications other than the MRCPsych examination.

Some changes take effect immediately while some require Charter and Bye-Law amendments and will go to the Annual General Meeting in 2012 and then on to the Privy Council for approval.

With immediate effect, Specialist Associates may apply for advertised and appointed posts which don't confer Trustee status (e.g. Specialist Adviser, College Lead), apply to be College examiners and apply to be College Assessors on Advisory Appointments Committees.

Proposed changes

The proposed changes which require amendments to our Royal Charter and Bye-Laws, and so are not yet effective are:

  • Ability to stand for all elected College Offices (including as elected member of a Faculty, Section or Division Executive Committee, member of Council, President, Dean, Registrar or Treasurer).
  • Ability to vote in College elections.
  • Ability to apply for appointed posts (Associate Registrar, Associate Dean) conferring Trustee status.

Please spread the news both to current Specialist Associates and to colleagues who may now think of applying for this grade of association.
