New institute to help narrow the health gap

A new University College London Institute that aims to reduce health inequalities through action on the social determinants was launched by the Health Secretary Andrew Lansley and Professor Sir Michael Marmot. The UCL Institute of Health Equity will receive £1 million funding from the Department of Health over the next three years to take forward action that will reduce health inequalities in England.


Report from the Forensic & Challenging Behaviour Product Review Sub Group

A new report summarises the work undertaken by the Forensic and Challenging Behaviour Product Review Sub Group over the past twelve months. It builds upon two strands of work, the first being the development of a clinically derived set of descriptors piloted by a group of London Medium Secure Units and the second being a modification of the Mental Health Clustering Tool (MHCT) and the 21 Clusters mandated for use in Working Aged Adult and Older Peoples services, piloted by two Trusts in the North East of England.


Health Research Authority

The Health Research Authority has started as the new regulator of health research. Its central purpose is to protect and promote the interests of patients and the public in health research. It will work with a range of stakeholders to combine and streamline the current approval process and promote proportionate standards for compliance and inspection.


60 new outcomes targets for NHS

New targets have been created to measure the quality of care delivered by the NHS in England, centring on patient experience and feedback and how staff respond to patient needs. The 60 targets are grouped into the following sections of care: premature death; quality of life for people with long-term conditions; helping people recover after ill-health or injury; patient experience; and treating people safely. Let us know what you think.


NHS publish latest version of Mental Health Minimum Dataset

The fifth annual report on NHS adult specialist mental health services in England covers the most recent information for 2010/11 and looks at hospital care and services delivered in the community.
