The Perinatal Research Network

The Perinatal Research NetworkAdvancing Research in Perinatal Mental Illness

The Perinatal Section is keen to promote research into perinatal mental illness and its treatment. There are a number of practical difficulties facing researchers, not least the problem of ensuring that the the numbers studied are large enough to produce meaningful results. To this end the Section has established a Perinatal Research Network - a new email group to link researchers and clinicians across the UK and further afield. The Network will keep people informed about new studies, new results and new opportunities to help with research, via email and a regular research network newsletter.

The group is open to both College members and other professionals involved in research or clinical work in Perinatal mental health. To join the group  please email with your name and contact details.

College members not already members of the Perinatal Section can join the Section here.

Please note that by joining the network, you are consenting that your name and email address be shared with other members of the network.

BDRN - Bipolar Disorder Research Network

The Bipolar Disorder Research Network (BDRN) is a group of researchers and research participants in the UK undertaking a major study aimed at investigating the underlying causes of bipolar disorder. The study is funded by two of the world’s leading research charities:

  • Wellcome Trust
  • Stanley Medical Research Institute.

The study is led by research groups from Cardiff and Birmingham Universities. Working with collaborators in Europe and the USA, it is the largest study of bipolar disorder in the world. As part of this study researchers are very interested in severe episodes of illness following childbirth. They are currently recruiting individuals with a history of bipolar disorder throughout the UK and are particularly looking for participants who have:

  • experienced an episode of postpartum psychosis
  • have a history of bipolar disorder and are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant.

For more information about the study please visit the website.

BISMArC (BIpolar and Schizo-affective recurrences in Mothers After Childbirth) Project

This retrospective multi-centre naturalistic study aims to describe prescribing patterns in women with bipolar or schizo-affective (bipolar type) illnesses at risk of or experiencing episodes associated with childbearing in specialist perinatal services in the UK, and to determine recurrence rates and the outcomes of preventative treatment.

Data collection at nine sites has now concluded and is being processed.
