Lecture by Professor Norman Sartorious
'Globalization and the Future of
Psychiatry' 8 January 2008
Globalisation, the development of
science, socio-economic changes, the evolution of the
ethos of medicine and of social support systems present
challenges and opportunities for psychiatry. The lecture will
examine these factors and their impact on psychiatry and an
outline of possible set of priorities for its optimal
development.
Professor Sartorius is the
President of the International Association for the Promotion of
Mental Health Programmes and President of the Board of the Prize of
Geneva.
He joined the World Health Organisation
(WHO) in 1967 and held numerous senior positions including heading
the Programme of Epidemiology in Social Psychiatry, Principal
Investigator of several major international studies on
schizophrenia, on depression and on health service delivery and
Director of the Division of Mental Health of WHO.
