Congratulations to our immediate
Past-President, Professor Dinesh Bhugra, who - as many of you will
have seen - was awarded
a CBE in the New Year's Honours list for services to
psychiatry. This honour not only recognises the major positive
impact that Dinesh has made in the field of mental health, but
gives a voice to the 1 in 4 of us who will suffer from mental
health problems over our lifetimes.
Dinesh will be a familiar face to many of
you, having been active within the College since 1985. He chaired
the Collegiate Trainees Committee (1987); the Overseas Doctors
Training Committee (1996-2007); and the Faculty of General and
Community Psychiatry (1997-2001). He was Dean from 2003 to 2007,
and President from 2008 to 2011. And earlier this year, Dinesh
became President Elect of the World Psychiatric Association
(WPA).
In 2009, Dinesh founded the RCPsych Awards
to recognise and reward excellence in psychiatry and mental health.
I was delighted to be able to continue this fantastic initiative
when I became President, and next week we will be launching
the call for entries for the 2012 Awards. We'll need your help
in our search for the outstanding teams and individuals who are
making a real difference to mental health services.
I'd also like to congratulate child and
adolescent psychiatrists Dr Eileen Vizard and Dr Lesley
Hewson. Eileen was awarded a CBE for services to young people and
Lesley an OBE for services to children. It's good to see child
and adolescent psychiatrists being recognised in this way.
Wishing you all a happy New Year.
Sue
