Regular readers of this blog will know I've
had ongoing meetings with Dr David Shiers around improving
the physical health of young people with mental illness. I
thought you like to know what work the College
Centre for Quality Improvement (CCQI) are doing on this.
Physical health standards are already an
important component of the quality networks and accreditation
programmes that CCQI runs. Standards for all these quality
improvement programmes are currently being reviewed to see if they
can be further strengthened.
The physical health needs of people who use
mental health services is also central to the National Audit of Schizophrenia, which will be
published later this year. We had an excellent response to the
audit and data provided clinicians and colleagues from around the
country are currently being complied. We are working with service
users from Rethink Mental Illness on the audit, and will use
its publication to promote a Physical Health Booklet they have
developed to help service users play an active role in
ensuring they receive high quality physical health care. We are
also working with colleagues at the Royal College of General
Practitioners to develop clear recommendations for improving
liaison between primary and secondary care, which we will also
promote when the audit findings are released.
