Service user & carer meetings

Tuesday, 20 September 2011

I'm enjoying the third day of the World Psychiatric Association's 15th World Congress of Psychiatry in Buenos Aires. Some of our Members are flying the flag for UK psychiatry with keynote addresses. Yesterday, Professor Graham Thornicroft spoke about recent developments and new trends in community mental health care, and later today Professor Janet Treasure will talk about 'Getting to the Fundamentals of Eating Disorders'.

Back in Belgrave Square, our Service Users’ Recovery Forum (SURF) and Carer’s Forum are both meeting today. The forums are composed of 30 service users and 30 carers from a wide range of backgrounds and experience, and from across all College jurisdications.

I'm very pleased to hear that my colleagues from the College of Psychiatry of Ireland will be in attendance as they are in the process of setting up similar forums, based on the College’s model for service user and carer engagement.

At today’s meeting the Forums will be considering, amongst other issues, the Joint Commissioning Panel for Mental Health, our Strategic Plan for 2012 to 2015, and will also be meeting with representatives from the Department of Health to discuss Payment by Results (PbR) in mental health settings.
