Northern Ireland & Mental Health Legislation

  • The Mental Health (Northern Ireland) Order 1986 governs the treatment of people with mental health problems in Northern Ireland. In October 2002, the Department of Health, Social Service and Public Safety (DHSSPS) initiated a wide-ranging, independent review of the law, policies and provision for mental health patients expected to take a minimum of two years to complete.
