West Midlands psychiatrists promote mental health through schools

Embargoed until Tuesday, February 09, 2010

The Royal College of Psychiatrists' West Midlands Division will be promoting mental health through schools during a special event in Walsall on 10 February.

The event, A Life Full of Colour, has been organised by psychiatrists Dr Safi Afghan and Dr Ananta Dave. It will demonstrate examples of mental health promotion through schools, and showcase collaborative working between health, education and other agencies in looking after children's emotional and mental health needs.

Speakers will include Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder of Kids Company, and Professor Sue Bailey, RCPsych Registrar and co-editor of The Young Mind, an essential guide to mental health for young adults, parents and teachers.

There will also a showing of short films, and a quiz competition for Year 9 and 10 students on the theme of mental health and illness.

A Life Full of Colour is supported by Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, and will be officially opened by Trust chairman Glyn Shaw.
