Quentin
Blake, one of Britain’s best-loved and most successful
illustrators, is exhibiting a selection of his prints at the 2010
International Congress of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in
Edinburgh.
Quentin has had a long career drawing
pictures for some of the world’s best-loved children’s books.
However, in recent years he has increasingly been working ‘off the
page’ and has used his humorous and humane imagination to make work
on a large scale for a variety of healthcare settings in London and
Paris. In particular, he has been producing site-specific images
for mental health trusts.
Exhibition curator Ghislaine Kenyon said:
“To many people, Quentin Blake needs no introduction. About 5 or 6
years ago, as he entered his 70s, he decided that illustrating
books was not enough. He was invited to do some drawings for
Kershaw Ward, a unit for older adults at South Kensington and
Chelsea Mental Health Centre. He spent time with service users,
clinicians and other staff informing himself about their world.
Although he did not have personal experience, he found something in
himself that responded to what it would have been like to be a
patient himself.
"After this, he was invited by many
others to do similar projects both in the UK and France. This
exhibition at the International Congress in Edinburgh is called
Into the Deep, and is a selection of Quentin's drawings
from this period of his work."
