Food ... Fun, Healthy and Safe

Many people do not eat a healthy diet, or think that eating nutritious food is no fun. This book aims to help people with learning disabilities and their carers to think about ways in which choosing, cooking and eating food can be fun as well as healthy and safe.

It tells the story of Matt and Lynne who want to learn how to prepare food for their friends. They are helped with shopping and preparing for a party. At the party, one of their friends chokes on a peanut which he carelessly tips into his mouth. Later in the book they cook a meal for a friend who is sad.

Through the story, the pictures illustrate various aspects of general hygiene and cleanliness in the kitchen, such as putting food in the fridge, keeping meat and vegetables apart and washing one’s hands.

Further information at the back includes a suggested storyline and do’s and don’t’s (in picture format) to prevent choking and on being clean and safe in the kitchen. It gives general advice on eating well and having a balanced diet, including a daily food pyramid. There are also outlines of special diets, such as for overweight people and those with diabetes. Finally, some suggestions for service providers are given.
