Physical Security
Event
As suggested in the in Cycle 5 Physical Security Event a
second event was held on 9 March 2012. It was a regional event
held in Doncaster at one of the Quality Network's member services.
It was an interesting day which provided the chance for small
groups to discuss common problems, potential solutions and to share
good practice.
In addition, a range of interesting presentations were
given, including presentations from Service Users, Commissioners
and Units who have been identifed as demonstrating good practice in
this area.
Presentations From The Day:
Please find below a leaflet created by the Quality Network
based on the challenges and solutions relating to physical
security identified by staff during the dicussion groups at the
workshop.
Access to Education in Medium
Secure Units Workshop
One of the recommendations in the Cycle 5 annual report was
to ensure that service users are provided with access to
education. As a result, the Quality Network held a day long
workshop in January 2012 to enable information sharing and to
troubleshoot possible solutions in this area.
The event was well attended and a range of interesting
presentations were given, including presentations from Service
Users, Open Learning College Network and Units who have been
identifed as demonstrating good practice in this area.
Presentations From The Day:
The Quality Network created an Access to Education
Leaflet based on the challenges and solutions relating
to access to education identified by staff during the
dicussion groups at the workshop.
Vocational Opportunities
for Service Users Workshop
The Network held an event
addressing vocational opportunities within medium secure
services in January 2012. The implementation of vocational
opportunities within services was highlighted as an area for
improvement for services in the Cycle 5 Annual Report. As such the
Network was keen to bring staff and service users together to
discuss the challenges regarding implementing Vocational
opportunities and to troubleshoot possible solutions.
The event was well attended and a
range of interesting presentations were given, including
presentations from Service Users, First Step Trust and
Units who have been identified as demonstrating good practice in
this area.
Presentations From The Day:
The Quality Network created a Vocational Opportunities

to vocational opportunities for service users identified
by staff during the dicussion groups at the workshop.
Evidence
Based Research
During the work and education workshops
delegates suggested that it would be helpful if they were able to
access an evidence base which supports the provision of Education
and Vocational Opportunities within MSU settings.
We therefore asked members of the Quality
Network to submit research, articles or reports which they thought
would be useful. These can be found in the policy library.
Recovery Models
Workshop
The Network held an event
addressing Recovery within medium secure services in January
2012. The implementation of Recovery within services was
highlighted as an area for improvement for services in the Cycle 5
Annual Report. As such the Network was keen to bring staff and
service users together to discuss the challenges regarding
implementing Recovery and to troubleshoot possible solutions.
The event was well attended and a
range of interesting presentations were given, including
presentations from Service Users, Commissioners and Units who
have been identifed as demonstrating good practice in this
area.
Presentations From The Day:
The Quality Network created a Recovery

relating to recovery identified by staff during the dicussion
groups at the workshop.
Service User
Recovery Stories
During the recovery workshop delegates suggested that a
collection of recovery stories written by service users would be
helpful for staff and service users to share good experiences and
to help engender hope. Therefore we asked our member services and
their service users as well as our Service User Experts to submit
their stories. This is an ongoing project so if you would like to
submit more service user recovery stories please email Sarah Stubbs.

Physical
Security Workshop
In February 2011 the Quality Network ran an afternoon workshop
for those interested in sharing problems and solutions regarding
Physical Security, which was one of the key recommendations arising
from the Cycle 4 reviews and
Annual Report.
Member units were asked to send in anonymous incidents where
physical security had played a part; these were collated, and
solutions were brainstormed during the day. The result was the
Physical Security Booklet, which is available below.
Good Food
Workshop
The Good Food Workshop in March 2011 was a result of another of
the recommendation from the Cycle 4 reviews and Annual Report; one
of the most consistent themes arising from the peer-reviews was
that the quality of food provided to patients in Medium Secure
Hospitals was of a low standard.
During the day, there were presentations from staff at units
that do provide good food, as well as from two ex-service
users on why food is important, and what can be done to improve the
food provision. In the afternoon, breakout sessions revolved around
brainstorming solutions for the many problems that units face when
trying to provide good food to patients.
Presentations from the day:
- Food
Strategy at the Women's MSU: Pheon Silaule, Lorraine Bean and
Peter Jackson, Smyth House, St Andrews Healthcare
- Using CQUIN
to Improve Food Quality at Farmfield Hospital: Robert Meeson,
