Service Standards for Therapeutic Communities for Children and Young People

  • In 2006 the Community of Communities was awarded a grant from the Big Lottery Fund to develop three new sets of Service Standards including the Service Standards for Therapeutic Communities for Children and Young People

  • The Service Standards were developed by an advisory group, chaired by John Turberville, Director of the Mulberry Bush School

  • The advisory group used the Charterhouse Group Standards (Charterhouse Group, 2000) and the Service Standards for Therapeutic Communities 5th Edition as an initial starting point

  • The Service Standards are structured around the 5 Outcomes outlined in the Every Child Matters framework (Department for Education and Skills, 2003) and are informed by a review of key documents referenced in the appendix

  • The first draft of the Service Standards for Therapeutic Communities for Children and Young People was sent to 60 communities, including client members and other experts in the field, for a broad consultation

  • There was generally a good consensus with most standards being rated as either "very important" or "important" to the quality of the service

  • The Service Standards were pilotted in a first annual cycle by 6 Therapeutic Communities for Children and Young People with the results published in a National Report

  • The Community of Communities developed the Service Standards for Therapeutic Communities for Children and Young People 2nd Edition in Autumn 2008
