Higher Training in Perinatal Psychiatry

Higher training in Perinatal Psychiatry

Specialist endorsement of higher training

Although there are a number of longstanding training posts, there is currently no endorsement for higher training in Perinatal Psychiatry. However, the Perinatal Section has prepared and submitted a draft Perinatal curriculum to PMetB for approval and the outcome is awaited. Unfortunately it will not be possible to retrospectively endorse jobs as it is not possible to approve existing posts without a PMetB approved curriculum.

In the meantime trainees may wish to use the draft curriculum to demonstrate their competencies. It can be downloaded here

Special interest sessions for SpRs

Virtually all Perinatal Psychiatrists are happy to offer special interest sessions and can be contacted directly to discuss this.

In a small number of locations there are also some very specialised opportunities such as:

  • Perinatal Addictions
  • Infant MH Services

Core Training (& F1, F2, VTS) posts

Availability of core training posts is patchy across the UK reflecting the inequitable distribution of services. Some jobs are purely Perinatal and others split with Liaison posts or General Adult jobs.

Specialty Registrar (ST4-6) posts

As with core training, the distribution of higher training posts is patchy. Consultants may be willing for trainees on other schemes to have special interest sessions. It is hoped that a specialist endorsement will be approved by PMetB during 2010. However it will not be possible to retrospectively endorse jobs.
