How much should I be paying?

 

The College Subscription year runs from January to December. In most cases the rate of subscription you pay is determined by your circumstances (or expected circumstances) on 1st January in that year. The subscription demand you receive in this mailing has been prepared on the basis of what we know currently about your circumstances. 

 

Payment Method

Most members in the UK pay their subscriptions by Direct Debit. The College offers a discount of £25 for payment in one Direct Debit instalment (January) and £15 for payment in two Direct Debit instalments (January and June). Retired members, PMPTs, and members overseas pay the lowest rate regardless of payment method.

To set up or alter a Direct Debit arrangement Members can now complete an online form through the Secure Members’ Area, click here to access the online Direct Debit page. Alternatively, please download and complete a form below and return it to the Membership Data Office at the College. If you wish to pay by two instalments then please include a note with your returned form, otherwise we will take the subscription out in one instalment. Please write your College membership number as the reference number on the direct debit form.  Please complete your Direct Debit form by 20 December 2014.

Tax Relief

The membership subscription is automatically tax deductible in the United Kingdom. At present it will save effectively at least 20% of the cost of the subscription, 40% for higher rate tax payers. The list under which your college subscriptions are classified as tax deductible can be located on the HMRC website. Under P it lists: ‘Psychiatrists, Royal College of’.

Part time work, maternity leave or career break

UK Fellows, Members, Specialist Associates and Affiliates can apply for a reduction of 50% of fees for 2014 if earnings for the subscription year are expected to be below £34,061 (figure based upon the BMA subscription scheme). Please contact the Membership Data Office for a Declaration Form or download one here. This concession is available for one year at a time, so even if you were on this rate for 2013 you should reapply if your circumstances have not changed.

 

Retirement

The College defines retirement as having left one's principal NHS/Health Board/Academic post and earning no more than 10% of the mid point of an NHS Consultant's salary from any continuing professional work (approx £9,000 at the moment). This earning figure refers specifically to ongoing gross income from professional practice- pension income is excluded from this calculation.  Please contact the Membership Data Office for a Declaration Form or click here to download a copy.

 

Emeritus Membership

Membership benefits continue without payment of further fees when a member achieves 40 years in membership (including membership of RMPA) or from 75 years of age. There is no need to make application - the Membership Data Office will work from information on the College database and apply the rate from 1st January following entitlement.

 

Joint Membership Discount

Fellows, Members, Specialist Associates and Affiliates can receive the joint membership rate if two members share the same address and one set of journals. The saving is £30 per person, per year.

 

Honorary Treasurer's Discretion

The Honorary Treasurer retains the authority to make other reductions where special circumstances are not appropriately addressed by the above categories. If you think this applies, please write to him in confidence at the College.

 

Overseas Fees

From 2002 a banding system has applied for overseas subscriptions. The scheme aims to address the fact that College fees can be a disproportionately high percentage of income for members working in some countries. Overseas rates have been applied automatically according to the address held for members outside the UK and you do not need to make any application. The schedule of country bandings is available on the College Website or on request from the Membership Data Office. It is based upon a similar scheme operated by the World Psychiatric Association and upon economic data supplied by the World Bank. 

Overseas members in Bands C or D can apply for a reduced rate if their monthly income is below a certain amount. Please click here for more information.
