Drug and Alcohol Core Competencies Project (DACC)

This project, running from February 2011 into early 2012, aims to develop a consensus across all medical specialities on the core competencies that all doctors need to adequately identify and manage patients who use drugs or alcohol. This is intended to build on previous work on drug and alcohol competencies in the undergraduate curriculum, by embedding core competencies in the curricula of all the Medical Colleges.

Roles and Competencies

In 2005, the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Royal College of General Practitioners published guidance on the roles and responsibilities of doctors treating substance misusers. A working group drawn from both Colleges is currently updating this work in the light of recent developments. A revised report will be published in the first part of 2012.
