About the Faculty

The purpose of the Faculty of General and Community Psychiatry is to liaise with and help educate and inform its members, colleagues within the College and external statutory and voluntary groups and agencies. We believe that this will support the aim of improving the standard of care given to those who look to us for help.

Due to increasing subspecialisation it is important that members views are adequately represented. The Faculty are trying to improve ways of communicating with individuals working within these specialist areas.

Please use this link to view further information on how to update your areas of interest and ensure that you receive information from the Faculty relating to your area of expertise.

It is important that we hear your views to keep this process moving forward. Please email us with feedback, questions or concerns.

Improving the effectiveness of the Faculty

One of the recent developments within the Faculty is to look at ways to improve the effectiveness of the Faculty and to find new ways to involve members more. The Faculty Executive hope to begin to address these problems by changing the executive structure, function and representation within the College.

The problems that need to be addressed are the increased workload for the General and Community Faculty as the remit of the Executive is broader than other Faculties, increasing subspecialisation of General and Community Psychiatry, less opportunities for members to contribute to the Executive in proportion to its membership as it follows a similar structure to other Faculties, and lack of knowledge about individual members due to the large number of members.

View the document "Improving the Effectiveness of the General and Community Faculty Executive Committee" . This outlines a proposal to change the structure of the Faculty and to develop networks within various clinical areas. The first two networks in Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment and Primary Care Liaison will be launched at the Faculty conference in October.
