- Learning about
Intellectual Disabilities and Health - A developing
website, funded by several organisations, presenting commissioned
information about various aspects of Learning Disabilities, for all
people. Graphics make it a little slow to load, and also seems to
be updated slowly. Bulletin board mentioned was in fact just a web
feedback form. Hopefully the site will become active again in the
near future, but has very useful range of articles already and is
particularly useful for medical students.
General introductory texts
Online Learning Disabilities
Textbook - M Roy, D Clarke, A Roy (Ed).
An introduction to Learning Disability Psychiatry (2000) A very
good online book, especially for trainees just starting a learning

Simple layout but a wealth of basic information. Last updated in
2000, states it is still being transferred but all chapters seem to
be there.

Department of Health Learning Disabilities
This site aims to provide up to date information from the
Government for professionals in the field, in which it succeeds,
and is working on being accessible to learning disabled people
themselves, which it acknowledges it is not as yet. Content is
comprehensive, navigation easy and there are an impressive number
of links and essential downloadable pdf documents. The pages load
quickly in a no-frills way, there is an e-mail address for contact
and overall the site is a must.

Contact a Family
Contact a Family is a UK charity which helps families who care
for children with any disability or special need. They are a main
source of information about rare disorders and are able to assist
affected adults as well as children. The site is easily searchable,
and information on a wide range of conditions is easily accessible
to parents, carers and professionals, with the option of ordering
further items. Content seems up to date and navigation is smooth,
and the pages fast loading yet still colourful. E-mail and local
contact addresses are available and the site has understandably won
a number of awards. Only penalty is limited free access per
month.
Mendelian
Inheritance in Man
Vast catalogue of genetic conditions with up-to-date medical
reviews on each. Kept well up to date. Searchable and easy to
navigate. Useful list of allied resources. E-mail contact
available. Parts of the site said to be available for FTP download,
but this wasn't functional. Not the most beautiful of sites but
does its job extremely well.
Down Syndrome Association (UK)
This site states it aims to make as much of their information
accessible to as many people as possible around the world. There
are over 200 pages of information regularly updated. Professionals,
carers and people with Down Syndrome and their families are all
catered for. The site is attractive but perhaps a little
over-elaborate in terms of graphic effects, multiple navigation
options and "ticker- tape" text which slow page loading a little.
There are many useful contact addresses and links. An essential
site for those of us concerned with the rights of people with Down
Syndrome.

Autism
National Autistic Society
Largest UK charity working for people with autistic spectrum
disorders. Useful list of publications, information and
comprehensive set of links to autism sites. Content for
professionals as well as those with such disorders and their
families. Site is searchable, looks good and is easy to navigate
through. Independently accredited as being accessible.
Allergy Induced
Autism
This site provides dietary recommendations to avoid
the exacerbation of autism, and improving patients’ physcial
comfort. Links to some medical articles. The site is very patient
orientated, and is focused on the dietary recommendations and the
user forum. Interesting information for anyone caring for someone
with autism.
Autistic Society
An
excellent and easily navigable site based in the United States
providing lots of information about most aspects of autism and
Asperger's syndrome. There are links to current medical research,
news updates, and medications. There are also forums for carers,
lists of alternative treatments, and advice on various legal
issues.

Autism and Related Disorders. The basic handbook for mental health,
primary care and other professionals. World Psychiatric
Association / Royal College of Psychiatrists.
A short useful multi-author summary on Autistic Spectrum Disorders
and behavioural and environmental management, which is quick to
read. Some minor inconsistencies and has little on common
perceptual and processing difficulties, but still a useful book for
any SHO.
National Society for
Epilepsy
This is a site with sections for members of the public as well as
professionals, the latter have to be registered for, fortunately
very easily, opening up much academic information. Content
available is vast, and the site is pleasing on the eye with very
clear sections and a search facility. One slight annoyance however
is the tendency for new windows to open on clicking certain links
within the site. The popular message board is a welcome feature,
there are plenty of means available to contact the Society as well
as relevant offsite links. British Epilepsy Association,
name has been changed to Epilepsy Action, provides information to
epileptics of all ages and those working with them. Interesting
features include chat facility and online shop. Smart and easy to
navigate, site search available. Up to date news. Many contact
points.

the Dually Diagnosed
North America based group that promotes the needs of people with a

Have a useful catalogue of educational resources and training
materials in the area of mental illness in people with Learning
Disability. I found the site structure and navigation a little
confusing at times, which was added to by the "members only" aspect
to many of the features, which of course comes at a price.

Foundation for People
with Learning Disabilities
Research organisation working with people with Learning
Disabilities to improve their quality of life. Site has variety of
information and research findings, mainly on services and support
systems. Very professionally laid out for fast loading and
navigation. Kept right up to date and searchable with working
guestbook, gallery, bulletin boards and forums encouraging
contributions from all. Take note, certain other sites!
British Institute Of Learning
Disabilities
BILD offers a range of services to support
learning by professionals, care staff, service users and their
families. This site has recently moved and had been difficult to
access but is up and running smoothly now. There is undoubtedly a
lot of useful information and specialised journals available from
BILD, but little is given away for free on the site, and one would
really have to pay to become a member and subscribe for each
service.
Norah Fry Research
Centre
Research centre producing research on services and lives of people
with Learning Disabilities. Has a variety of publications including
online documents and a Strategies For Change section giving advice
on the implementation of "Valuing People". Simple to navigate
through, regular updates, numerous points of contact, but again
much information including the Plain Facts magazine will cost.
Tizard Centre
Centre based at University of Kent, providing research and courses
on people with Learning Disabilities. Homepage takes a while to
load. Searchable. Good links section. Colour scheme not to
everyone's taste, I expect, but fairly easy to navigate. Not much
in the way of free content, Learning and Teaching section requires
membership of the University of Kent , several other materials have
to be paid for, but enough there for interested parties.
Links to international
organisations
AAMR - American Association on Mental
Retardation
Produces useful policy statements, publications, journals and
newsletter. Also has useful series of links to North American
sites. Homepage slow to load. The reading room provides some useful
downloadable documents and elsewhere abstracts of the Association's
journals can be found, although much content is for members only.
Discussion groups, chat and guestbook are a nice touch. Site is up
to date, not too garish and easy to navigate.
ASSID - The International
Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual DisabilitiesI
nternational group for the promotion of research and information.
Website at present mainly information on organisation structure,
but contains information on conferences and some documents it
produces, several are downloadable. Not a great deal of free
content but more than adequately serves its main purpose.
MAMH - European Association of
Intellectual Disability Medicine
European group to promote all aspects of the study of the medical
(including psychiatric) needs of people with Learning Disabilities.
Includes a description of services in various countries and long
list of links. This group seem to be doing an interesting and
important service, and the site is most attractive, perhaps paying
a small price for this though in loading times. Up to date and
quite a pleasure to navigate through.
