Faculty of Psychotherapy

  • To advance both within and without the college all modalities of psychotherapy (cognitive behavioural, psychodynamic and systemic) as an integral part of psychiatry.
  • To improve public knowledge of psychotherapy in the treatment of mental illness.
  • To increase theoretical and clinical knowledge of psychotherapy in the training of psychiatrists.
  • To promote research in psychotherapy.

The psychotherapy faculty advances these aims by:

  • Fostering the establishment of Consultant Psychotherapy posts, and development of psychotherapy departments in all Mental Health units.
  • Ensuring representatives are on appropriate committees in the College.
  • Having an active psychotherapy training committee developing and monitoring standards of psychotherapy training.
  • Responding to documents of relevance to psychotherapy, for example from the Department of Health.
  • Working with other organisations involved in the development of psychological treatments such as the British Psychological Society and the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies.
  • Arranging annual conferences on topics of interest.

News

An Interface Working Group was convened between the Faculties of Rehabilitation and Social Psychiatry and Psychotherapy last year to address the training requirements for psychiatrists to work effectively in services capable of delivering psychological therapies according to the NICE Schizophrenia Guidelines. The NHS plan directed the development of functional teams to provide care for people with serious mental illness, (chiefly schizophrenia).

The impending major changes in post-graduate medical education provide an ideal opportunity to review the training needs of psychiatrists in the area of psychological therapies for psychosis. A debate about the range of skills required within the new functional teams to deliver effective and comprehensive care to people suffering from schizophrenia is ongoing.

This document was written to inform consultants and trainees about the range of trainings that are available in psychological therapies for schizophrenia. It also provides a text around which consultation can occur about the training and acquisition of psychological therapy skills within teams offering treatment to those with schizophrenia.

This document has already been to consultation with the Faculties of General and Community Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, the College of Occupational Therapists, the British Psychological Society and a member of the National PSI Implementation Group who is also a Nurse Consultant in PSI. A Service User and Carer Representative were part of the original Working Group and they also attended the Consultation Event on 09 June 2005.

Your comments on the document to date would be helpful in informing the advice on training in psychological therapies for psychosis.

Cognitive behaviour therapy group

Cognitive behaviour therapy has established itself as an essential component of care in all branches of psychiatry. It is the most widely researched of all psychological treatments and has amassed a wealth of evidence for its effectiveness. The CBT group of the Royal College consists of members of the Psychotherapy Faculty who have an interest in cognitive and behavioural methods.

It is open to all psychiatrists who are members of the College. Its aims are to represent CBT within the Psychotherapy Faculty, to support and develop CBT training and skills amongst psychiatrists and to provide a forum where psychiatrists practising CBT can exchange information and opinions.

A number of psychiatrists with an interest in CBT are currently on the Psychotherapy Faculty Executive:

  • Stirling Moorey (chair of the CBT group)
  • Doug Turkington
  • Chris Williams

Richard Fox and Stirling Moorey are members of the Psychotherapy Training Specialist Advisory Committee (PTSAC) and advise on SpR training in CBT.
