About the Faculty of Rehabilitation and Social Psychiatry

Faculty and Executive Committee

The Faculty

The work of the executive

  • To provide the College with expert opinion in the fields of rehabilitation and enduring psychiatric disability.
  • To provide advice on social policies as they affect persons with enduring psychiatric disability.
  • To promote and develop Postgraduate Training in Rehabilitation and Social Psychiatry.
  • To encourage and promote scientific study and research in enduring psychiatric disability and the social factors that limit functioning.
  • To act as the coordinating body for the regional networks of Rehabilitation Psychiatrists.

The Rehabilitation and Social Faculty was created in 1997 as a result of the reorganisation of former Faculties within the College. Previously a Section of Social and Community Rehabilitation Psychiatry had represented the interests and concerns of Social and Community Psychiatrists as well as Rehabilitation Psychiatrists.

After the reorganisation, Community Psychiatry was put together with General Psychiatry leaving Rehabilitation and Social Psychiatry on their own. As Rehabilitation Psychiatry is currently a sub-speciality of General Psychiatry and does not have its own CCST, it did not qualify for Faculty status and thus became a Section.

The Faculty currently has approximately 1600 members. They are mailed approximately three times a year, informed about Faculty’s activities and take part in the Faculty’s elections.

The Faculty holds one annual residential meeting a year usually lasting two days. The topics range from reports of scientific research to workshops on practical clinical interventions and service delivery.

Regional representatives

The Regional Representative is the Faculty’s person on the spot. They have:

  1. The opportunity to attend 2 meetings a year with Officers of the Faculty.
  2. The opportunity to influence Regional Training programmes through membership of a Higher Specialist Training Committee.
  3. Work with a Regional Advisor on vetting job descriptions. In addition to this Regional Advisors are encouraged to maintain a regional database, develop a network within the Region, holding meetings for Rehabilitation Consultants and perhaps arranging a roadshow on Rehabilitation.
  4. Finally a Regional Representative can be used to "trouble shoot" areas where there are difficulties experienced by Rehabilitation services and can if necessary call upon Officers of the Faculty to lend additional support.
