ST3 to ST4 Allocation: Results of Trainees' Survey

You will be aware that the situation regarding allocation of ST3 trainees into ST4 specialties is currently unclear. The Psychiatric Trainees’ Committee (PTC) of the Royal College of Psychiatrists aims to promote a solution that is most equitable for trainees. The PTC conducted an online survey to determine tranees' views about the issue of allocation into ST4 CCT Speciality posts within Run-Through Training.

627 trainees completed the survey and the results can be viewed via the document below:

The difficulties in reaching a solution include:
  • Whether trainees wish to prioritise specialty choice or geographical location
  • Some specialties will not be available in some deaneries every year and so if allocation occurs only within deanery there may be no opportunity for trainees to compete for the specialty of their choice
  • Whether trainees can be expected to identify before they commence ST1 what subspecialty they wish to pursue in the future
  • Whether some form of national allocation is warranted

The options considered by MMC are:
  • Closed allocation within deaneries
  • National allocation
  • A hybrid option where a proportion of jobs from each deanery are placed in a national pool
