Mental Capacity Act

Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS)

The course will describe the key aspects of the doctor’s role in relation to DoLS (formerly known as the Bournewood proposals), which will implemented from Spring 2009. This training will establish your role as an Assessor in relation to DoLS, and the overall position of DoLS in relation to mental health legislation.

Content includes mental health, mental capacity and eligibility assessments; advance decisions; the roles of the Best Interests Assessor and the Independent Mental Capacity Advocate; lasting powers of attorney and the role of the Court of Protection, and appropriate use of either detention under the Mental Health Act or a DoLS Authorisation under the Mental Capacity Act.
