ONE to ONE COACHING – Developing Excellence

Investing in YOUR personal and professional development . . .

The Royal College of Psychiatrists Education and Training Centre (CETC) now offer confidential One to One Coaching for consultant psychiatrists. The sessions will be facilitated by one of our team of experienced coaches. The coaching work is co-ordinated by Dr David Roy, Consultant Psychiatrist and former Medical Director of South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, who has been providing one to one coaching for many years.

Dr Roy will discuss your needs and arrange for an appropriate coaching session designed to give you the support you require.

Why do I need a coach?

Coaching can:

• Improve your effectiveness, enthusiasm and productivity

• Support you through a period of change

• Add value to your work as an educational supervisor

• Enhance your management skills

• Enable you to balance personal and organisational goals

• Develop alignment with core values

• Improve interpersonal skills and relationships

• Increase potential for collaborative working

• Provide a focus for career choice and personal development

What does a coach do?

A coach works to your agenda. Coaches use focussed conversation and, where appropriate, psychometrics. We have a variety of coaches and your coach will be selected and the techniques tailored to your personal requirements. The work will be intensive, independent and confidential.

What if I have a mentor? How does it differ?

Unlike a coach, a mentor will normally give direct advice based on their own experience.  Consultants often have a mentor early in their career. The mentor is usually a senior person who works within a similar service. The coaching provided by the Royal College of Psychiatrists is intended for more experienced consultants.

How long will the sessions last?

A coaching session normally lasts for 90 minutes.

Do I need more than one session?

It is possible to have a one-off session, but it is more usual to arrange a series of four or more sessions at intervals of one or two months. This will depend on your individual need.

How much does it cost and who should pay?

A single face-to-face, one and a half hour coaching session costs £400 plus VAT. We can offer a discount for those who wish to book a series of sessions. If you intend to ask your employer to meet the cost, you might discuss this during your appraisal and consider incorporating the coaching sessions into your Personal Development Plan.
