Overview

This one day course has been designed to bring a Scottish perspective to one of the more challenging areas of practice. Many psychiatrists describe their interactions with patients with Borderline Personality Disorder as the most stressful part of their job! On the other hand, this work can be extremely rewarding if given a model in which to understand and manage the tensions that exist between patients and carers, with primary care and within mental health teams.

The recent change of emphasis towards treatment under the new Mental Health Act, the development of Integrated Care Pathways and the publication of NICE and other guidelines for management of Borderline patients have created much debate.

Access to psychological therapies may vary across regions and the nature of the most appropriate interventions remains controversial. This course will summarise the evidence for psychological therapies. Mentalization skills will be demonstrated and developed utilising small group teaching and role plays. This course is eligible for 6 CPD hours subject to your peer group approval.

Topics Include

The course will provide an understanding of:

  • Aetiology and Epidemiology

  • Diagnostic issues including use of PDQ-4

  • Integrated Care Pathways

  • Overview of the evidence for psychological therapies, including ‘The Matrix: a guide to planning and delivering evidence-based Psychological Therapies within Scotland’

  • Introduction to mentalization
