Improving your Communication Skills in Clinical Settings

Who should attend

This course is aimed at core psychiatry trainees or specialty doctors, who are experiencing difficulties obtaining the RCPsych CASC examination due to communication difficulties. This course does not seek to specifically address clinical knowledge in respect of the CASC examination.

By the end of this course you will have

• Developed an understanding of different clinical consultation models
• Explored the concept of patient centred clinical communication
• Considered the effects of language and culture in clinical communication
• Understood commonly used strategies to build rapport, listen, elicit, negotiate and plan

• Reflected on your own personal style of communicating and identify ideas for development

• Reflectively utilised constructive feedback from others to improve your own performance

Learning methods

Powerpoint presentations, videos, some small group work and role play practice exercises.

Additional personalised feedback

Delegates will be given the opportunity to video an actual clinical consultation, conducted by themselves, with patient consent (up to 10 minutes in length), anytime up to 6 months after the conclusion of the course. Dr Doody or Dr Pinner will review this tape and offer personalised bespoke written feedback to the delegate. An information pack will be given to all delegates wishing to undertake this additional opportunity after the conclusion of the main session.

This course is eligible for 6 CPD hours subject to your peer group approval.
