Overview

The numbers and frequency of major incidents and disasters is rising. However, the proportion of affected people who are killed by them is falling. Perhaps, this is one reason why the psychosocial, mental health and mental illness consequences have come to the fore in the last decade.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists, under the leadership of Professor Richards Williams and supported by a multi-professional team, has undertaken considerable development in this field with, for example: NATO, the EU, the Government of England and the Health Protection Agency. As a result the College has produced a clear set of learning objectives, guidance and a model of care designed to support a range of professionals who may have to confront, cope with and/or manage disasters in their lifetime.

The College has defined four levels of training for mental health professionals:

1. Awareness

2. Core knowledge and capabilities

3. Training for consultant practice with people who develop mental

    disorders

4. The advanced knowledge and skills required by mental health

    professionals who advise incident commanders.

About the Course

This one day course is intended to deliver training to Levels 1 and 2. It is thought provoking and, while especially designed for core trainees to help them understand the background, priorities, issues and possible roles of clinicians involved in preparation for and handling of disasters, it is also highly relevant to senior trainees and consultants who are starting out in this field and who may wish to progress to Levels 3 or 4. Furthermore, mental health professionals who are interested in public mental health are also likely to find the content helpful.

This course is eligible for 6 CPD hours subject to your peer group approval.
