In psychoanalytic and psychiatric
terminology the movement towards concrete containment or a concrete
solution can appear somewhat simplistic but at the infantile level
of functioning this is precisely what is needed.
The infant needs environmental and
somatic handling as well as emotional and psychological holding. It
is sometimes necessary to provide this concrete containment for a
patient, often under detention using the Mental Health Act before
it is possible to move towards this position of emotional and
psychological holding of the type I was describing in relation to a
psychotherapeutic relationship earlier.
