This worried expression (courtesy
of a Rembrandt etching) probably reflects how I looked as I went
though my psychiatry textbooks and discovered myself therein.
Perhaps this process of being
reminded of myself could have put me off a career in psychiatry but
in fact it had the opposite effect of drawing me towards a life in
which I could exercise my curiosity about my own mind and the minds
of others.
I have come to think of it as
career which is as much about curiosity as it is cure. This implies
a mutual process of engaging in unconscious and conscious work. I
see this as a mutual process of being reminded of patient and
therapist and at this level we have a human encounter which in my
mind is at the heart of psychiatry and
psychotherapy.
