The pressure “to do” in relation to that suicidal patient in the middle of the night is to admit them to hospital. Henry Rey who was a Psychoanalyst and Psychiatrist at the Maudsley Hospital in London, used the concept of the Brick Mother to describe the psychiatric unit. In this concept he was highlighting the regression in the patient to a need to be held as an infant might, in a helpless state of mind.
