The pressure “to do” in relation to
that suicidal patient in the middle of the night is to admit them
to hospital. Henry Rey who was a Psychoanalyst and
Psychiatrist at the Maudsley Hospital in London, used the concept
of the Brick Mother to describe the psychiatric unit. In this
concept he was highlighting the regression in the patient to a need
to be held as an infant might, in a helpless state of mind.
