Manchester Psychiatry Society

Manchester psychiatry society Manchester psychiatry society

The Manchester Psychiatry Society was formed by two psychiatric registrars in April 2009. Since then it has become a society run by students, for students. The main aims of the society are to increase awareness of mental illness and to encourage students to discover what psychiatry can offer as a career.

The society's inaugural event was a hotly-contested debate entitled "This House Believes Depression is a Medical Illness". Dr. Patrick Mbaya spoke for the house, with Dr. Frank Margison speaking against the house, and Dr. Ross Overshott (all consultant psychiatrists) chairing the debate. Keen audience participation in the Q&A session, as well as an opportunity to meet speakers afterwards, ensured an enjoyable evening for all. Debates, as well as lectures, careers nights, and OSCE revision workshops are all being planned for the forthcoming year.

A founding principle of the society is to encourage involvement from everyone; as such medical students in years 1-5 are invited to events as well as students from any discipline, with no membership or attendance fees. Our member base is already over 200, and is set to rise as the new academic year commences.
