PUP

The Peninsula Undergraduate Psychiatry Society (psychsoc) was created in early 2009 by a 4th year student as part of his “Doctors as Teachers” special study module, to see if extra-curricular student special interest groups helped students learning of a speciality.  The society now has three reps and a president, each based at one of the 3 main hospital localities – Exeter, Plymouth and Truro, due to the expansive area The Peninsula Medical School covers (all of Devon and Cornwall).

Each locality rep organises their own events based on local consultant psychiatrist input and resources.  The society has over 100 members and has hosted events ranging from topics such as the mental health of doctors, forensic psychiatry, OSCE preparation, mental-state exam workshops and psychopharmacology tutorials.  The society offers students both curriculum and non-curriculum based topics.  We have been lucky enough to be given a grant for the start-up of the society from The Peninsula Deanery which has helped us immensely to organise events more effectively, and allowing us to offer our events free of charge.
