The University of Birmingham Psychiatry Society

The University of Birmingham Psychiatry Society (‘Psych Soc’) aims to create an environment in which aspects of psychiatry can be discussed thereby encouraging more interest in psychiatry amongst medical students at the university.  Psych Soc also intends to provide useful information about different possible careers within the specialty and to enable opportunities of practice for psychiatry examinations, and generally raise awareness of mental health issues.

Since their first meeting, the society has expanded and held several popular and interesting events.  Currently it is organised by a new committee of 6 students with the support of Dr Rebekah Bourne and various other members of staff from the Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

The society has held discussion evenings on topics ranging from Tourette’s syndrome and alcohol abuse to the role of literature in psychiatry.  Meetings are held once a month, and the format can vary from talks by visiting psychiatrists to film and discussion evenings. There are plans for career bites and OSCE simulations in the coming months.

‘Psych Soc’ hope to raise awareness of mental health among the student population, and intend to hold fundraising events in the future to support mental health charities.

Our website is currently in progress, but we hope that it will soon be fully equipped with posts about each month’s meeting, book and film reviews and links to the Royal College of Psychiatrists website and other useful sites.

All meetings are free and open to anyone interested, whether a member of the society or not. The committee are always looking for new and exciting ideas for future events, so if you have any ideas or wish to contact the society please feel free to get in touch through our Facebook group or our society email.
