The use of alcohol and other drugs is widely recognised as a
major public health challenge with wide-reaching social and
economic consequences. A special working group has developed a
consensus across 13 medical Colleges and Faculties on the core
competencies, which it recommends should be incorporated into
postgraduate curricula for all doctors, of all specialties. These
will help to underpin the attitudes and awareness needed to
increase rates of identification and treatment and are a
contribution to the wider changes needed to address this major
public health challenge.
